Black History Month is racist
Model Adrianne Curry launched into a lengthy diatribe against BET and Black History Month last Friday on her MySpace blog. May I present a few select quotes:
“Yes, I get it. Black people were slaves here once. You know what? That does suck some major balls, however, it is time to move the fuck on.”
“Do we hear the Jews crying that they were made slaves for thousands of years? Do we hear them whine that they should OWN the pyramids in Egypt because THEY broke their backs making them? Do we hear them bitch and moan about Hitler, etc? (my hubby is a Jew)Nope, we dont.”
“If any other race had a chanel dedicated to just them, we would think it was racist. If any other race demanded a month be set aside for ONLY them, they would be considered racist.”
“I will no longer tune into BET. This is going to suck, but I do NOT like the idea of having a chanel for only 1 race. In the year 2007 in a country that is supposed to be the most advanced and equal. This is unexceptable! I will also no longer acknowledge Black History Month.”

dude, I’ve always felt it was totally unfair and wrong to let this sort of racism go on…meaning, one race being acknowledged simply because they were slaves. Dude, Irish were slaves to the English. The Chinese built the freakin pacific railroad (they weren’t allowed to have wives here either), the Native American is STILL shit on by American. Do we have months dedicated to them?
So some white dude owned your great great grandfather. Some white dude owned my great great great grandfather in England. Do you see me picketing for a channel of my own?
The mass media is flooded with racially diverse music and media. I’ll grant you that Hollywood likes to keep to its lighter shades, but Hollywood can suck my sweaty conch. They are only interested in big bucks anyhoo.
Do I watch Asian movies? yes. Check out Charlotte Somemtimes, Ashes of Time, In the Mood for Love…
Do I watch Irish Movies? yes dammit.
Do I watch Black movies? yes!!!!
Do I want to watch a channel dedicated to ONLY them and have to celebrate a month of their history? No.
Stop asking for special treatment and then maybe this quasi “i’m gonna shit on you cuz you shit on my ancestors” attitude will fade. Its just dumb.

It was awful that Britian and America enslaved Africans and brought them all over the british empire and Americas and used them as slaves…
…yet, lets ignore how African culture has used slaves for centuries and im pretty sure some still do.
Britian and America have learnt their lesson and we all know racism and slavery is wrong, its damn wrong and shouldnt happen and for the most part its ended.
Yet look at Africa where people are being murdered, kidnapped, harrassed and raped because their either white or because their black and support the wrong political party.
Isnt it calling the kettle black when African Americans complain about racism in America, while VIOLENT and HORRIFIC crimes are being committed against white native Africans because they own land?
The women is absolutely right saying that it would be concidered racist if there was a purely “white” TV channel, ONLY showing “white” related cultural programmes and music.
And yet its ok to have dedicated Black channels?
Why cant we just combine both white and black cultures in all media like TV, radio, films and magazines or I was under the impression that was what we were doing?
First off, I am NOT black but I really don’t think it’s slavery that’s the point. How would you like it if YOUR interests are not being represented by the mainstream media? For example, black models on magazine covers don’t sell well to white America…so they don’t use black models. I don’t think what white Americans think black people feel is really accurate. I don’t think black people are harping SLAVERY, SLAVERY all the time. Let’s face it racism still EXISTS today. (Aside from racism–)When Nastia Lukin won…the media was disappointed that their American sweetheart Shawn Johnson didn’t win the all around gold but yet we’re ALL Americans.

I’m confused….there is not only 1 channel for white people but many…get my drift. Slavery has nothing to do with why we have our our own outlets. Tell me all I should do is accept the dominant culture’s point of view…which seems to me mine does not count or I not have one? So ergo our own….get my drift.

I think it’s necessary to point out, that the Jews didn’t build the pyramids and weren’t slaves in ancient Egypt. So let alone the time frames being compared, and the fact it is fiction, kind of makes it a stupid comparison to the black slaves.
We have the villages and documents that show the pyramids were built by paid Egyptian workers, and not by slaves. Even down to an idea of how they were organised. Its thoroughly documented and verified. We just don’t know the building techniques. They even have documents showing a worker used the same aunt as dying twice as an excuse to get the day off work.
Doesn’t matter if it’s in the bible and what have you, it just didn’t happen.
As have been pointed out, other minorities and groups have tv channels. Where do you draw the line, there are so many specialised channels. Also BET and what have you, are they paid for by the viewers or the govt? Not like it’s a public service, it caters to an audience.

There should never be dominance of minorities over others, they need to be recognised. Honestly if you have no interest in black history month, does it adversely effect your life?

Let’s jump in our time machines and go back to the 1700’s - and not ever bring slaves to North America. Well, cotton and agricultural things might have been more expensive - but the same folks who populate BET and the like would have been born in Africa. Would that continent be any different today ??? A Do: tighten up the grammar grab that Strunk, the whole Strunk and nothin’ but the Strunk: a chanel…1 race…unexceptable!
It is really easy for anybody that is not black to sit on their Judgement Throne, and make assertations about why they feel that Black History Month and BET are racist because this is an easy way to cop out of having any respect for anything that is Black related. Here are some things that you should consider, (and keep in mind that her diatribe IS AN ATTACK AGAINST BLACK INTEREST):
1) During the period of slavery
- Black families were separated
- Black slaves had to obey whatever the Whites ordered or punishment would incur (ex. lengthy bullwhippings, a hand or leg would be amputated, being hung to death, starvation, humiliation in front of other blacks and some family members, etc.)
- Their was no retirement, so, blacks would work until they died
- Rape from White men toward Black woman
2) Emancipation Proclamation
- Blacks in the North were free but blacks in the south were still kept from being free from the slaveowners
- Blacks had their own Civil War infantry, and were the first group to die on the Civil War lines
- Blacks were not given any form of education
- Birth of the KKK (first terrorist group)
- During the World Wars, the draft almost 100% made all of the Black Males fight in the war (compare to the percentage of White Males, in which White Males outnumbered Black Males from census polls)
- Unequal pay compared to White Males pay… And, no the Blacks could not save up enough money to go back to Africa
- Slavery in the South ended very late compared to the North
3) Amendments
- Blacks were finally given the ability to vote and educate
- Segregation — Black were given outdated books, placed in unhealthy buildings to learn (in the back of the campuses), had to go to the back of buses or wait for a Black driven bus, Blacks were not allowed to certain entertainment venues, and Blacks had their own sports teams
- The average highest education for a Black in the ’30s was elementary education, but only a small few were able get a college degree
- Scientist conducted a long term STD test on a group of Black Soldiers exclusively, and had the vaccine given to the group of White Soldiers
- Blacks that traveled to States like Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana were mobbed and lynched from the buses they were traveling in
- Bus Travel — Blacks had to allow the White person to go first onto the bus, then, they would pay their fare to the White Bus Driver, but, after they paid the fare they would have to get off of the bus and walk to the rear door (to get to the back of the bus), and sometimes the White Bus Driver would drive off (leaving the Black stranded) — think about how the Black worker to be late to his job (possible being fired), and still getting unequal pay
4) Black Leadership
- Rosa Parks decided that enough was enough with getting to the back of the bus
- Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
- Little Rock Nine
- United Negro College Fund
- National Urban League
- Martin Luther King (to name a few)
5) Today
- The divide of equal pay is diminishing, but there are still wide gaps depending on the industry of trade
- Hate groups such as the KKK and Aryan Nation still exists to propogate hate against Blacks, Jews, Indians, and Mexicans
- Hate crimes do still exist in towns like Jenna, Jasper, and others
- Subtle Racism and deception are still employed by Whites primarily against Blacks in daily living (shopping, family income, comparative treatment of criminals, scholarships, etc.)
Now, after reading all of this, could you understand why it is important to teach my Black Future Generation of these things, and to have a pride for who they are (YES, a month should be given for Black History). BET may not be the station that it was in it’s beginning, however, it does provide a strong lineage to a segment of Black Culture for Blacks to embrace (sometimes with a disgrace), and for other races to explore with wonderment about the Black Race. So, Adrianne Curry, has no idea what Pandora’s Box she is beginning to open, and when I last looked at the TV, I saw over 3 Hispanic stations (I’m in DFW, Texas BTW). Her knowledge is very limited, thus, she is ignorant, and since she does not want to acknowledge Black History Month, then, she should have kept her mouth closed (regardless of her being married to a Jew). Also, being married to a Jew does not give Adrianne any access to bash the Black Race, and, if a Jew wants to have their TV station they could if they want to (yes, they should have a TV station dedicated to their culture).
She’s correct… deal with it.
I think the most insulting thing is that BET is supposed to represent Black culture. Cultural channels like CIN, Chinese TV, and Telemundo are OK, those are actually catering to culture divides not handled by the other channels (language divides, shows that one might be used to from home if they are new to the country, etc). BET is a joke. BET is basically saying “Black people like Gangsta life style, hos, bling, etc” I want someone to show me this channel for black people. it certainly isn’t BET.
Also black people in america weren’t marching and charging to have a month devoted to them, they were marching for equal rights. I don’t know any intelligent black person going on saying “you want your own channel/month? THATS RACIST” It sucks that everyone only pays attention to the idiots. The ones that speak the loudest are often the ones not worth listening to.
This is in response to the slavery post by “Bitterness”. You think Blacks were the only slaves that got that sort of treatment? Native Americans weren’t considered human. Irish women had to deal with the fact that they MIGHT have to give their viriginity to the ruling English lord before they could go to their wedding night with their Irish husband. When the Irish tater famine hit and they couldn’t pay their rent, the english didn’t give a shit. These families starved…the only solution the English government came up with was to give them corn to eat. CORN! The Irish began dying in droves of scurvy. Some families were forced to put their pre teen kids on boats to american hoping they’d make it alive…only to have these same kids go into prostitution to survive.
The chinese who built the pacific railroad were forced to live in what is bascially Chinatown in San Fran. They weren’t allowed families to join them. Their wives were forced to stay in China…again, they weren’t considered human.
Back to the Native Americans. My grandmother was full Choktaw Indian. If you go to their reservation now and look at the markets that supply food to the families there…you’d be shocked. You’d be lucky to find meat that isn’t a shade too green to eat. Seriously. And these were the people here BEFORE the whites. Do we have Native American history month? Do you realize how many Indians were murdered or died from disease that white people brought with them? Do we have NATV? No.
The point is…YES slavery is wrong…for ANY race. Instead of having a Black history month, lets try a history month that covers all the ninorities in American who had to tough it out and rise above the muck to become something better than their opressors ever wanted them to be. It isn’t about being black.

I read your response to my post, and my answer is that I would go along with your solution only if White America would:
- All of White America were to stop being insensitve regarding Black America and Black Interest
- Teach White America about African American History (rather than a Chapter)
- Socially rebuke fellow White Americans that make racial insensitive remarks toward Black Americans
- All American Businesses give equal pay (per job experience and education)
- Dismantle all Hate Groups
- White America invest into Black Groups, Interests, Community, and Businesses
- White America should stop cloaking their real feelings about Blacks, and learn to Love Black People.

Do you think maybe treatment of the blacks by “white america” is maybe due to decisions made by black america? Black America is led somewhat by idiots such as Jesse Jackson, it pains me to say reverand and Al Sharpton who by their actions only hurt your cause. Why don’t black americans stand up against the hate streaming from these mens mouths’ as the supposebly represent the black race? Listening to Obama’s preacher makes me cringe - because black’s claim they want equality yet they still have leaders of their cause spewing hate towards whites. You absolutely cannot look at the white race and determine that is us oppressing you - for goodness sake I dont think there even is a “white america” - it is almost shameful to be white in this country america for fear that we automatically think we are better than you. However truth be told if we have the White Entertainment Awards, blacks would be screaming racism and it would be shut down. If whites had a magazine with absolutely no blacks in it, it would be racism. If we rode around with “White Pride” on our bumper stickers we would be considered part of the KKK, however, Black Pride on your bumper sticker must be acceptable by the whites.
I really don’t think that black america can say white america is racist without looking first at themselves. I am a woman, I make less money than a man, I don’t run around screaming gender inequality and decide to do nothing with my life because of this fact, no, I choose to try my hardest, work with integrity and do my best and at least contribute to society. Do you see a difference?
Jenipurr and Alan, you are making your points, however, the sincerity of the American Dream is false (and, that is what all of the Minorities see of America). Keep in mind the majority rules when it comes down to legislation, policies, economy, transportation, etc., and tell me, in America which class and race of people have been running America for Centuries (of these that make up the framework of America).

I really truly believe that if ALL PEOPLE, ALL COLORS, ALL RELIGIONS, EVERYONE EVERYWHERE shut the hell up about the (1) poor, trod-upon ancestors, (2) the difference in their skin colors, and (3) how hard life is for them now, due to (1) and (2) above, we would all be so much better for it. GET OVER IT!!!!! These statements are divisive. They do nothing whatsoever except increase the divide between races / sexes / whatever. Yes, ugly things did happen in teh past. Yes, your ANCESTORS were affected by those things. No, YOU are not affected by them. YOUR life reflects the results of YOUR decisions and YOUR actions. Stop trying to blame the past for the condition of your situation today. It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard, and an argument that will not stand the test of logic. So, we all have a choice here: (1) either get the hell over it, stop blathering incessantly about the past and start walking into the future, or (2) continue as we are, and watch our greandchildren have to deal with the same stupid arguments and problems. Now as far as Miss Adrienne who barely can speak english , i think she forgot it was a black woman who got her career started and so what if you have a problem with BET DON’T WATCH IT THEN!! Hell its a white person who owns the company along with MTV. Racism still exists today and none of you would know how it feels until your treatedin such a way. But its people like you that continue keep racism alive.
Tiffany, no one…or at least I haven’t been…claiming racism doesn’t exist. What I’m stating is that no one race should be able to have a month dedicated to them when other races who have just as rich history of opression get squat.
People are tired of the blame game too. My grandmother wasn’t black, but she was indian and you dont see me moaning for my own history month cuz she had to work in a labor camp or live on a reservation. If we stop recoginizing ONE race (that includes whites) and just recognize our history as a nation…including all the bloody details then maybe we can get along better.

i can see there is never gonna be a end to any discussion on race.. but basically i think whatever she sed lack tact. it also shows her lack of media manner- if ur gonna come on and say sumthig like that make sure u do background checks b4 u open ur mouth+ she aint that important
..im from london, the uk and over here there are loads of channels dedicated to other races and only a few that represent blacks, from example zee tv, and other asian networks.
and the bottom line is when u are a minority in a country channels and stuff like that are not created to Isolate whites, but like stated earlier there to be outlet for other cultures and programs that would not be readily available.
bet or other channels alike have not sed whites etc can use the channel have they, but the channel does ensure that 4/7 if u wanted to watch something orientated around blacks etc thats the channel u can go to.
if the demand is there …then there needs to be a supply

but the facts are More blacks than jews suffered, and yes every race have suffered to the white man. In responce to “Bitterness”, you made a lot of valid points concerning slavery in America and the horrific impacts it on Black families and lives and its true those things should be remembered by teaching Black History.
But that isnt the ONLY part of African history!
Would you also want to remember all the slavery amoungst African tribes which has been going on for centuries, long before America or Britian came along?
Would you also want to talk about the current state of affairs in Africa concerning the treatment of native white Africans being forced off their lands by Black Africans?
Its all well and good pointing out the horrible actions of America and Britian towards the black community on a rememberance day or month, but black history is anything but perfect.
Black history also include slavery against its own people!!

Okay, let me say this… I applaud Adrianne Curry for being true to herself, and she does not have to watch BET, however, who said or how did it get to her that Black are crying about slavery in the year of 2008. BLACKS ARE OVER SLAVERY!
I totally RESPECT the comments by Lauren, Tiffany and SNS, however, when a Black person sees remarks made by an individual making light of Black Slavery (and, STOP right there… we are not talking about Indians, Jews, are any other race), it smacks of arrogance, insensitivy, and just plain mean. NO, I am not crying about it, because we still have not shed light upon the Black Race selling off its own Race (Africans selling other Africans to the White trader), but we are talking about comments Adrianne Curry said about Black History Month and BET (not Indians, Mexicans, or Irishmen and lets stop comparing them to Blacks because THEY DID NOT SUFFER THE MOST).
Jenipurr, Alan, and Seriously????, you all sound very intelligent, my questions are why do you care so much to make Black people be quiet about their history, when, White people have been proclamating their causes for centuries? Why are you so scared to see any Minority group RISE TO POWER? Why do White people have to control everything? Maybe, this is why China, Russia, Korea, Arabs, Africans, and some others don’t like the European/American White Man? Or, am I wrong to say that, REALLY? Is it wrong?
I personally dont mind hearing about any cultures history, aslong as (like I mentioned in the earlier posts) we get to hear about all of their history and not picking and choosing aspects that make them apear like only victims and apear like they have never done anything wrong.
I think the issues are a result of how popular media (including a lot of black comedians) seem to constantly obsess over slavery, the treatment of black people in American society and how black majorities live in poverty.
Personally I love comedians like Chris Rock, but he is a perfect example of how black issues are constantly brought back and thrown in your face because he uses a lot of material based around racism towards Black culture.
Now he may be funny as hell when doing it, but has he no other material to work from?
We all get that a lot of black rappers/singers come from poor areas in society and have been in gangs and attacked others, but do we have to constantly hear about it in songs?
Its just feeding this stereotype that all black people live in slums, regardless of whether its true or not and that is what young white kids only ever get to see on tv.
Media is to blame for the miss conceptions and the resentment, not the black people. I would seriously doubt most black people walk around their day constantly talking about or thinking about this stuff, and most probably just talk about sport or relationships and the same nonsense we all do.
But in the media all we hear about is poverty, racism and slavery and you do get sick of it.
Its like the issue with that poor child going missing in spain and how she still hasnt been found. It was tragic to hear about, but after the 100th news report about it and the 100th live broadcast by her parents you start to think “oh for god sake, shut up we dont care anymore”.
It an awful thing to think, but thats what happens when your over exposed to the same stuff all the time.

And Bitterness, oppression doesnt just happen between white and non-white cultures. You have oppression between the upper and lower classes of white society even today. We have issues between the south of england being a lot richer then the North, so things arent as rosey in good old White mans land.
You have to keep in mind that most oppression caused by white culture (although look at Africa today and the oppression of its own people), started centuries ago when we were a more niave culture purely driven by religion.
Most issues in this world are a result of organised religion being taken too seriously and people using it as an excuse to invade, kill or enslave others.
The rise of white culture to a dominant power in the world is nothing more then sheer arrogance in thinking we were made in Gods image and anyone different wasnt.
Thats the main reason a lot of Eastern cultures dislike the west, purely because they take their religion too seriously and think we should be smited, bombed and killed.
But lets say we lived in an alternative world were the black man rules America and they were the dominant culture, do you really think America would be a nicer, better, loving place?
What if Africans had discovered America and become the dominant race on that continent, would they not have enslaved indians and attacked the native people just like the white man?
Would we not be in exactly the same situation, except a different skin colour?
No race or culture is perfect and given enough time to gain power and dominance and create weapons of mass destruction, they can become blinded by that power and declare themselves in gods image.
