Following yesterday’s landmark California Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage, Ellen Degeneres announced on her show (airing today) that she’s marrying her partner Portia de Rossi. A spy in the audience told TMZ:
. . . after Ellen mentioned today’s California Supreme Court ruling striking down the state’s ban on gay marriage, she surprised everyone and announced that she was going to tie the knot with longtime girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi. Portia was in the crowd and after she made the announcement, the studio audience went wild, giving the two a huge standing O. (Source)
Degeneres told The Advocate:
I’m thrilled that the California supreme court overturned the ban on gay marriage. I can’t wait to get married. We all deserve the same rights, and I believe that someday we’ll look back on this and not allowing gays to marry will seem as absurd as not allowing women to vote.

They always crow about the triumph of gay marriages…and within minutes, they’re getting divorced and brawling in court over everything. California better learn from other states and work that divorce thing out. Isn’t that what happened with Melissa Etheridge?
She’s only taking her to the altar to take her to the cleaners in court later… And Abe has a point - California has long had the domestic partners deal - where gay couples had all the rights that married couples do - they just need to have the tag “married” so they can feel that they are the “same” as real married couples. That strange and twisted relationship (man and woman) is what human society has been built on… People - do what you want, but don’t feel the need to jam it in everyone elses faces… Just sayin’

I don’t get why everybody is being so negative. If getting married is going to make Ellen and Portia happy, then let them. They deserve to have a union just like a man and a woman. What they do with their lives doesn’t have anything to do with your life and doesn’t affect you. So live your life and let them live theirs. I’m very happy for them and wish them the best.
