Dog didn’t know

Dog the Bounty Hunter pleads ignorance
Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman pleads ignorance

Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman sat down with Fox News’ Hannity & Colmes last night in his first interview since the infamous audio tape of him unleashing a racist tirade against his son’s African American girlfriend was leaked to the public. With a straight face, Dog told Hannity (5:45 mark on the video below):

“I thought that I was cool enough in the black world to be able to use that word as a brother to a brother. I’m not. I didn’t really know until three or four days ago what that meant to black people . . . I never realized that that’s like stabbing a black person in the heart.”

Yelling fire in crowded theatre–not OK. Stealing candy from a baby–generally frowned upon. Making bomb jokes at the airport–don’t do that. Speeding in a school zone–again, try not to do that. Calling in a death threat against the President–to be avoided. Anybody got anymore? I figure we should get a list going for Dog. Ooh–during the summer you shouldn’t leave a baby in a car with the windows rolled up–that’s a good one.

Dog the Bounty Hunter is racist
Dog the Bounty Hunter racism scandal

Believe it or not, Dog the Bounty Hunter is not the bastion of racial tolerance his outward appearance may suggest. The National Enquirer obtained an audio tape (Listen Here NSFW language) of Dog unleashing a racist tirade against his son’s African American girlfriend Monique. Ironically Dog was worried about Monique “turning him into the Enquirer magazine” over his use of racist language. Dog even goes as far as threatening to fire his son unless he breaks up with her.

Predictably, A&E had Dog on a short leash:

“A&E has just learned of the story released by the National Enquirer concerning Duane Dog Chapman. We take this matter very seriously. Pending an investigation, we have suspended production on the series. When the inquiry is concluded we will take appropriate action.”

When asked to comment on the situation, Michael Richards, Don Imus, and the American History X version of Edward Norton all replied, “Holy shit that guy’s racist.”

My prediction is this whole thing should blow over in a few hours. Of course I also predicted Cuba would beat us to the moon in 1969 so take that for what it’s worth.

UPDATE: Bumped for the morning crew
