Michael Douglas at a photocall for Wall Street at the Cannes Film Festival

Michael Douglas refuses to sign a petition of support for Roman Polanski that's circulating the Cannes Film Festival, because, um, the dude ass-raped a 13-year-old girl. From the AP:
Michael Douglas says he will not sign a petition in support of director Roman Polanski, who is under house arrest in Switzerland in connection with a 33-year-old sex scandal.

Douglas, whose "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" is screening at the nCannes Film Festival, told French radio it would be "unfair" for him to sign a petition for "somebody who did break the law."

Other filmmakers at the festival, including French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard and actor-director Mathieu Amalric, have signed the petition, which is posted on a Web site overseen by renowned French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy.

In the interview with RTL radio broadcast on Friday, Douglas said Polanski had been given "some bad advice" when the scandal broke.
Obviously Michael's choice not to support Roman is because the filmmaker did some despicable things to an unconscious teenager . . . and not the fact that he has a big-budget movie coming out in a couple of weeks. Frankly, after marrying someone 25-years his junior, it's surprising that Michael wasn't the first in line to come to Roman's defense. Look, I'm not saying that he supports rape -- I'm just saying that, you know, "NO" doesn't always mean "NO." It's all in the tone.

polanski did not "have sex" with a young girl, as teh media likes to put it; he lured a 13 year old into a house, gave her drugs and alcohol, and then raped her.

then he fled the US before his sentencing, with the excuse that the judge may have given him jail time, which polanski found totally unacceptable.

he should rot in hell, and thumbs up to michael douglas for not supporting a childrapist, as so many others have done simply because polanksi casts them in his shitty movies.

"What Roman is accused of doing in not a crime in many societies and cultures, and is considered a perfectly normal action for an elder male to undertake"

    lol wut?

Where is raping an underage girl while she is intoxicated NOT a crime?

Political but good move. Too bad he's married to a pig

I am sure Douglas has the sentencing of his own son fresh on his mind and figures that slime Polanski needs to finally pay his dues. As for Douglas having a younger wife she was twenty some odd years removed from the young teen Polanski sodomized. Douglas choice was a personal decision of a legal nature.

For one thing, we know it's you, Paul.

For another, just because you enjoyed being sodomized at 13 does not mean isn't a crime in most parts if the world nor is abusing children acceptable regardless of where you live.

Hell, even in hardcore prisons, child molesters get zero respect.

Good for Michael Douglas for not supporting Polanski.

A political move on Michael's part. What Roman is accused of doing in not a crime in many societies and cultures, and is considered a perfectly normal action for an elder male to undertake. Why should Roman be criminalized for something that in many parts of the world is an everyday thing? We must be more open to cultural diversity, and more accepting of other mores.
